When I was in kindergarten back in Russia, we always decorated windows with paper snowflakes for New Year’s holiday. We competed each other to see whose snowflakes were the best.
As a little child, I believed that snowflakes were a gift from Santa Claus, all handcrafted by himself. I would go outside to catch real snowflakes and looked at them carefully to remember their patterns.
Even though I loved cutting paper into complicated patterns, I knew that my snowflakes could never be as pretty as real ones.
When I first saw Mino washi, the way its white texture was playing in sunlight reminded me of real snowflakes. Mino washi was smooth and flexible, and yet durable. I just knew that it would make perfect paper snowflakes. Bringing back my childhood memory, I drew various
snowflake patterns. My patterns were then made into beautiful products, which amazed me a lot. They looked exactly like real snowflakes!
